President

Janice Elmhirst, PhD, British Columbia

Janice Elmhirst joined the Board of Directors in 2014.  She was elected President for the year 2016-2017 and re-elected for 2017-2018.  Janice is also a member of the Priority Planning and Fundraising Committee.

Her company, Elmhirst Diagnostics & Research, conducts pest management research trials on a wide variety of horticultural crops in British Columbia for both government and industry. Her company strives to provide new, less toxic and more effective pesticide alternatives to growers and to train young scientists in the techniques of conducting horticultural pest management trials. 

Janice has a BSc in Environmental Biology from the University of Guelph and and a PhD in Botany from the University of Toronto and is the author of many scientific articles and research reports.  She has been an Expert Reviewer for the BC Innovation Council since 2007, editor of the greenhouse vegetable, turf and landscape section of Pest Management Research Reports since 2008, co-chair of the National Science Committee, Phytophthora ramorum /Sudden Oak Death (SOD) Task Force since 2005, and is the newly-appointed editor of the Canadian Plant Disease Survey in 2016. 

She is the co-author of “Garden Bugs of BC” and is dedicated to making plant pathology accessible to ornamental nursery growers and home gardeners.   Janice served as President of the Canadian Phytopathological Society in 2013-2014.
